“When I approach a child, they inspire in me two sentiments - tenderness for what they are and respect for what they may become” - Louis Pasteur (Chemist & Biologist)
Mariah Sugiura is a provisionally licensed mental health practitioner who has served in early childhood since she was 12 years old as a nanny, preschool teacher, youth group and Sunday school leader. She obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from University of Hawaii in 2016 and her Masters of Science in School Counseling from University of Nebraska Omaha in 2020. She has worked as a licensed school counselor in the Elementary setting for 4 years. She completed her clinical internship with the Community Alliance Day Rehabilitation Program.
Mariah is a military child of 26 years and understands how transitions and unexpected events can affect a families daily routine and overall cohesiveness. She has lived in various states as well as Japan which has strengthened her cultural awareness. She is extremely passionate about helping children of all ages and families to find value in who they are as an individual. Another one of her passions is teaching and helping others learn the importance of identifying and managing their feelings/emotions appropriately. “Children must be taught how to think, not what to think” -Margaret Mead (Cultural Anthropologist)
As a mother herself, Mariah has learned not to pressure her child to become the person she wants him to be, but rather help him find his own way. She believes to help a child learn how to advocate for their own needs, it’s important to model assertiveness, positive self-talk, and the ability to regulate emotions. Everyone deserves a chance to share with the world all they have to offer!
“Children are not things to be molded, but are people to be unfolded” - Jess Lair (Self-Help Leader)
